Starting the Global Environment Facility Full-Size project on “Global Best Practices on Emerging Chemical Policy issues of Concern under Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM)”
Mr Samantha Kumarasena, CEO of NCPC Sri Lanka participated at the two days interactive workshop which was held at United Nations Office at Geneva Switzerland, with Professor Ranjith Dissanayake, President of Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL) and Ms Sujeewa Fernando, Assistant Director of Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment (MMD&E). This workshop was for planning the implementation of the 4 years Global project on above, implemented in 8 countries, mainly through National Cleaner Production Centres (NCPCs). The project addresses two main Chemicals of Concerns, Lead in Paints and Chemicals in products (CIP).
In Sri Lanka, the scope of the project will be Chemicals in Products for the Construction Sector. NCPC, Sri Lanka partner with MMD&E and GBCSL in implementing this project.
The project will support the MMD&E to implement the currently formulated Green Public Procurement Policy in the Construction sector as Pilot. The existing Green Building Certification Scheme of GBCSL will be strengthen by developing the criteria for CIPs in line with globally accepted norms under the Chemicals of Concerns with multi-stakeholder participation.
NCPC, Sri Lanka will directly support under the project to the industries in the supply chain of the Construction sector to improve the performance to meet the compliance requirements.
